Services

Work readiness training for school leavers

Work readiness training for school leavers

We support school leavers to build the communication and practical skills needed for work, volunteering, and community participation.

This may include support with workplace communication, following routines, asking for help, interacting with supervisors and co-workers, and applying skills in real-life environments.

The program is run in our clinic once a week for 10 weeks, with each session running for 3 hours. This service may be funded under Core supports where appropriate.

Positive behaviour support

Positive behaviour support

Positive behaviour support often involves building communication skills so a person can express unmet needs, reduce frustration, and participate more successfully in everyday life.

We explore different communication options, work alongside other allied health professionals, and help families, carers, schools, and support staff apply these strategies in everyday environments. Staff and carer training can also be provided to support consistency across settings.

A team-based model of care

A team-based model of care

All initial consultations are completed with the Principal Speech Pathologist and the therapist who will be working with you or your child. Ongoing intervention is also overseen by the Principal Speech Pathologist.

We also have a feeding specialist who works from our clinic, along with access to a clinical psychologist who also works from our clinic for consultation where needed.
This approach helps provide practical, well-rounded support and continuity of care from the beginning.

Our approach

At Speechify, we are:
  • relationship-based
  • neuro-affirming
  • family-centred
  • practical and individualised
  • connected with schools and support teams
  • focused on meaningful real-life outcomes

We aim to understand the whole person, not just the difficulty on paper, and to build supports that make a difference in everyday life.

More than weekly therapy

Speechify offers more than direct therapy sessions. We also support:
  • school collaboration
  • communication planning
  • learning plans and adjustments
  • parent coaching and workshops
  • AAC implementation
  • school readiness and transitions
  • positive behaviour support
  • work placement support for school leavers

Our goal is to help communication skills carry over into everyday life.

School support

Many students do not just need more therapy. They need the adults around them to better understand how they communicate, learn, regulate, and participate.

Speechify works with schools and families to build practical support around the student and improve everyday outcomes

This may include:
  • classroom observations
  • meetings with school staff
  • support with Individual Learning Plans and  adjustments
  • communication strategies for the classroom
  • AAC implementation support
  • school readiness and transition planning
  • support to understand behaviour through a communication and regulation lens
  • collaboration between school, family, and support teams

We help schools and families identify what the student is finding difficult, why these difficulties are showing up, what supports are likely to help, and how progress can be measured in meaningful ways.

Training and areas of practice

Our speech pathologists have training across a range of clinical areas and therapy approaches, including:
  • Orofacial Myology
  • DIRFloortime®
  • Key Word Signing
  • LAMP Words for Life®, PODD and Proloquo2go/Crescendo
  • Westmead Feelings Program
  • Social Thinking®
  • Hanen programs, including It Takes Two to Talk® and More Than Words®
  • SOS Feeding Approach
  • Speech Sound Disorders
  • Sounds-Write
  • Talk for Writing
  • trauma-informed care
  • areas relevant to autism assessment and profile development, including ADOS-2 and MIGDAS
  • swallowing and feeding assessment, including DDS & DMSS

Swallowing Assessments and Mealtime Management

We provide standardised swallowing and feeding assessments for children and adults with disability. These assessments help identify swallowing and feeding difficulties, severity, mealtime management needs, and important safety risks such as choking and pneumonia. They also look at chewing, oral control, swallowing safety, food and drink texture needs, positioning, eating independence, and the practical supports needed for safer mealtimes.

We also develop practical mealtime management plans for adults in nursing homes, supported independent living, day programs, and other care settings. We provide mobile visits and can complete assessments in the person’s usual environment, so recommendations are practical, relevant, and easier for staff and families to follow day to day.

No long waiting times. Urgent referrals welcome.

Rupert

Rupert is Speechify’s resident Flemish Giant rabbit, although he looks more like a bilby and behaves like he owns the place.

As our Happiness Specialist, Rupert is known for lifting moods, accepting cuddles, chasing balls, and making himself very comfortable. He loves attention, pats, kale, and being admired for his excellent ears. Call his name and he will often pop his head up to see what is happening.

Rupert also takes his quality control role seriously, especially when it comes to taste-testing paper, inspecting coffee cups, and keeping everyone alert around loose cords.

He is currently working hard to win Rosie over. Rosie remains committed to her personal space, but Rupert remains optimistic.

Team member

Rosie

Former Happiness Specialist
Now living her best life...

Rosie is a mini-lop (DOB 28/12/22) who recently resigned from her public duties at Speechify to focus on her true passions: eating, stimming, and avoiding anything that looks like work. Proudly neurospicy, Rosie prefers to be in her own bubble where there’s no noise, no unexpected pats, and definitely no demands.

She has a classic PDA (Persistent Drive for Autonomy) profile. If you ask her to do something, she’ll do the opposite… eventually… maybe. Easily overwhelmed by loud sounds, strangers in her personal space, or anyone daring to interrupt her hay time, Rosie has perfected the art of living authentically. Rosie’s other great skill is avoiding Roger. Despite his ongoing attempts at friendship, she remains firmly uninterested, maintaining a polite-but-distant professional relationship. If her boundaries aren’t respected, Rosie will respond in a way that might justify a detailed behaviour plan. Unfortunately, the funding just isn’t there.

These days, she’s happily retired, dedicating herself to her special interests: eating, sleeping, and mastering the fine art of pooping while chewing.

Louise

Accountant

Louise helps with NDIS invoicing and the many behind-the-scenes admin tasks that keep Speechify running smoothly.

Our Vision

Speechify exists to help children, young people and adults communicate, participate and feel safe.

We are a specialist, relationship-based practice for people whose needs are complex and do not fit standard clinic models. We see communication as a human right and as the foundation for safety, identity, consent and real-life participation.

We combine targeted therapy with coaching, school and service consultation, and practical tools so that change happens not only in the therapy room, but in homes, classrooms, day programs and out in the community. We choose depth over volume: fewer people, supported properly.

Our Values

PASSION

We care deeply about what we do and about what you can achieve. We show up curious, prepared and hopeful so that everyone has a fair chance to be the best they can be.

PROFESSIONALISM

We are honest and do what we say we will do. We use evidence-informed practice, clear documentation and regular supervision. We continually develop our skills so that our clients receive thoughtful, up-to-date support.

PRACTICAL

We focus on real life. Goals are specific, achievable and meaningful in your daily routines: home, school, work, community and health settings.

EMPOWER

We aim to give you and your team the tools so you know exactly what to do next. We want families, support workers and educators to feel confident, in control and able to keep progress going between sessions.

ENJOYMENT

Learning sticks when people feel safe and interested. We use creativity, play and special interests to build engagement and motivation, while always respecting sensory needs and emotional limits.

FAMILY AND NETWORK-CENTRED

We recognise that the people who know you best are essential to good outcomes. We work alongside families, schools, support workers and other professionals to build a shared plan and a shared language.

COMMUNICATION

We communicate with you in ways that are clear, respectful and meaningful. We support speech, AAC, gesture, behaviour and any other channels a person uses. For us, communication is less about saying more words and more about having real power to:

  • give or withhold consent
  • set limits and change direction
  • ask for help and name when you are not ok
  • describe your identity, preferences and story in your own way

COLLABORATION

We work closely with teachers, OTs, dieticians, psychologists, behaviour practitioners, support workers, agencies, GPs, paediatricians and services. We write reports and create resources that others can actually use in their daily work with you.

COMMITMENT

We are committed to problem-solving, even when situations are complex. We stay curious, adjust plans as needed and do not give up easily.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT & NEURO-AFFIRMING PRACTICE

We believe everyone does well if they can. We start from strengths and possibility. We see behaviour as communication and information, not as something to control at all costs. We support people to build the skills they need to meet expectations or to adjust those expectations so they are realistic, respectful and safe. In everything we do, we keep three anchors in mind:

  • Communication as safety, rights and identity
  • Trauma-informed, neuro-affirming practice
  • Context-first work that reaches far beyond the clinic room
